Church & State Wines Merlot takes 98 points, Best Canadian Red

For the eighth time in as many years, Church & State Wines has been named producer of Best Canadian Red at a major competition, taking a stunning 98-point score at the New World International Wine Competition for the 2014 Signature Series Merlot. At the same competition, the winery was also awarded a 95-point score and title of Best New World Chardonnay in Show for the 2015 Signature Series Chardonnay – the highest score awarded to a Canadian white wine.

Church & State’s proprietor and founder, Kim Pullen, attributes the outstanding series of wins to an unyielding commitment to quality. “The winery was founded on the philosophy of doing whatever was necessary to produce the highest quality wine possible. Each vintage, we farm our vineyards with the sole purpose of producing the highest quality fruit, and we carefully blend our various blocks to showcase the superior lots in our Signature Series wines. This series represents the cutting-edge of Church & State Wines.”

Founded in 1991, the New World International Wine Competition judges wines in a double-blind format from North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, by wine professionals from around the world. NWIWC awards Best of Varietal – the best wine by varietal regardless of price, Best of Class – the best wine by varietal at a particular price point, Double Gold – awarded to wines awarded Gold by all judges, in addition to the standard Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.

The 2014 Signature Series Merlot was awarded Double Gold, 98 points and Best in Class, receiving the highest score awarded to any Canadian wine. The 2015 Signature Series Chardonnay, was awarded Gold, 95 points, Best of Varietal – New World Chardonnay, Best of Class and Best Canadian White Wine.
